The Goldfields-Esperance region is the largest in Western Australia, covering an area three times the size of Victoria. The Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission (GEDC) board identified a potentially long-term high demand for labour within the region and that meeting this demand is vital to keeping the economy thriving. Disengagement is a barrier to employment and an issue with varying degrees of severity across Australia. In seeking solutions to meet the current and longer-term demand for labour, the GEDC board identified the requirement to understand the level and impact of youth disengagement in the region. Our team prepared and presented a comprehensive analysis. The report presented the opportunity to stimulate thinking on how to re-invest or invest differently to have improved engagement with the result of better participation in education, training and employment, and social outcomes in the future.
